As a trade printing expert, we take each binding process very seriously, so that your clients’ demands go beyond their expectations. Here’s an general overview of the round back binding production process:
- Sewing and gluing: After the signatures (grouped pages) are sewn together, glue is applied to the spine.
- Rounding: While the glue is still flexible, the spine is shaped into a convex curve. This is typically done by placing the text block (the body of the book) between special tools called rounding hammers or in a rounding press, and then manually manipulating the spine into the desired curved shape.
- Backing: Following the rounding, the book undergoes a process called "backing." Here, the spine is further shaped, and the edges of the spine are bent or folded over slightly. This creates "shoulders" on the spine, which correspond to the inner edges of the cover.
